The answer is, it’s called slab on grade because they don’t get consistent freezing temperatures which in Canada you do, and foundation has to go a minimum of 4 feet below ground to avoid frost heave. Same as in Victoria and Greater Vancouver area you are allowed to do slab on grade. All that being said the ground that slab on grade is poured onto (In Canada anyways) requires a ground compaction test (engineered) to make sure the soil is stable enough to support a structure

Yes, I know no basements in Texas. I was raised in Colorado, now in Texas. homes have no basements. I wonder if it’s bc of poor drainage system when it rains?

We have basements in New England but I’m in Florida now and we don’t have basements here, I think it’s due to water table.

More basements are found in tornado alley. So the panhandle, north Texas and west Texas have more houses with basements

Sorry, but in Vancouver and the surrounding area, basements are uncommon, and temperatures rarely fall below 0°C in winter. You seem to be thinking of Canada as if it were only Ontario.

I think the no basement thing has to do with the type of dirt cause Virginia is the same way, both have the red clay type dirt. While I know other states that most houses have them. All I could figure out years ago.

The ground is hard to dig up in certain areas. also with the dry weather the foundation will shift too much and start causing issues. we have storm cellars instead.
