in my real life I've never met a golden that can walk nicely on leash (at least for the ones I know just cause they're SO excited) so I will never believe the goldens are easy propaganda

As a dog trainer we get soooooo many golden retrievers!! People think they are naturally easy but it’s not true at all!

lol this comment always drives me nuts. Like sorry I chose a biddable breed that I actually enjoy?! There’s not an award for having a harder to train dog. Sincerely, an owner of a Great Pyrenees and a golden retriever SD 😅. I’d way rather be a great handler with an “easy” dog. Less effort and better outcome 👏

I’d say the most difficult thing about them is competing against stimuli. Everyone is a best friend. EVERYONE. So yes, handler focused but distracted very, very easily.

Oooof this is a hard one! I think a great handler with an “easy” dog bc I think people will generalize any retriever as easy. I get so mad when dublin is called an “easy” dog because he’s biddable breed…I picked that with purpose and it doesn’t make him an easier than another dog!

after owning a golden (he failed sd work so went back to breeder shortly after 12m) and that experience I'll happily stick with my working/guardian breed thanks! 110% easier for me and more my style.

If retrievers are easy then ig companion lap dogs are sentient rugs 😂. Biddability is great but they’re EXCESSIVELY enthusiastic about everything which makes it kinda difficult to manage them in different ways. Easy to teach a new trick, but now they demand bark bc they want to get the treat faster. Or they know how to heel, but that goes out the window the second they hear baby talk 😂. The easier the dog the better imo lol

I’ve had a few people query me on whether Zuko (my standard poodle) was “easier” than Sandy (my mutt) and honestly, Sandy was a BREEZE compared to Zuko. I’m not saying that Zuko is a difficult dog, but their training journeys are so different. For one, I didn’t start actually training Sandy until she was an adult. But also, Zuko is higher drive, higher energy, and higher intelligence. He pushes boundaries because of his age (10 months— teenager lol). He needs a reason to follow directions; he needs to know “why” he should do something. He requires accountability. Whereas for Sandy, it all came so naturally to her. All this to say, just because a dog is a member of the Fab Four doesn’t mean training will automatically be easy. We’ve put so much work in, with both of my dogs, and have so much more to go.

I’m a dog groomer lol honestly any trained dog is a flex to me truthfully. I’ve met LOTS of golden retrievers who aren’t friendly or well behaved so as long as your dog has enough training that they’re easy or manageable for their groom I’m happy 😂 a trained dog shows me how much the owners care for their dogs

I really don’t think there is a such thing as an easy dog. All dogs have challenges. But I personally I am okay with being known as a mediocre handler with a difficult dog bc I want a breed I am passionate about and my fav breeds are on the difficult side.

Raising any dog is hard. But I’ve had goldens my entire life & one Aussie.. goldens are 1726272 times easier lol but I know a lot of it is just chance!

That’s a hard one to decide. Easy dogs still have their issues. But a difficult dog I guess I feel could be easy to. Tucker has been a more difficult dog than any dog I’ve known and been around in the past , he is so smart but definitely is harder to train, but that’s why I spend so much time training.
