@dailymailau: Nine people were pulled from the water and treated for bruises and early signs of hypothermia, according to local reports. The Alilaguna ferry broke down before reaching the Rialto Bridge and was unable to shift gears. It manoeuvred to avoid two police boats, which then began following it after realising something was wrong. The out-of-control water taxi passed under the Rialto arch, scraping along the bridge, before striking the Fondaco dei Tedeschi pier. It then hit one gondola before colliding with a second carrying tourists, tipping them and the gondolier into the water. The engine broke, i live in Venice, was there a couple of minutes after it happened. Just engine failure and the skipper panicked and failed to react on time to just remove the key.
