Surveillance footage reportedly showed Alberts entering her son’s room and using a syringe on his IV line. When investigators questioned her, she first claimed she was only flushing the line with water because her son said the medication burned. But she later admitted the truth. Alberts said she had been injecting her son’s own fecal matter directly into his IV. According to investigators, she claimed she did it because she wanted him transferred to a different unit where she believed he would receive better care. Instead, the injections repeatedly made him dangerously ill while he was already fighting leukemia. Alberts was charged with attempted m*rder, aggravated battery, and neglect. A jury later found her not guilty of attempted m*rder, but convicted her of six counts of aggravated battery and one count of neglect. In 2019, she was sentenced to 12 years, with seven years to be served in prison and five years suspended. Her son survived.
