@dharmic_unite: The varna system is an ancient Hindu framework that organizes society into four broad groups—Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra—based on people’s qualities (guna) and work (karma). One of the earliest references appears in the Rig Veda (Purusha Sukta, 10.90), which symbolically describes these four varnas as emerging from different parts of the cosmic being, indicating a functional and interdependent social order rather than a hierarchy of worth. Classical Hindu philosophy clearly states that varna is not determined by birth. In the Bhagavad Gita (4.13), Krishna says: “Chatur-varnyam maya srishtam guna-karma-vibhagashah” — “The four varnas were created by Me according to qualities and actions.” This verse is often cited as direct evidence that varna was meant to reflect a person’s nature and conduct, not lineage. Historical and literary sources show mobility between varnas. Many revered sages, such as Valmiki (author of the Ramayana) and Ved Vyasa (compiler of the Vedas), were not born Brahmins, yet attained the highest spiritual status. The Mahabharata also repeatedly emphasizes that character and behavior define a person, stating: “By conduct one becomes a Brahmin, not by birth.” Over time, especially in the medieval period, the varna idea became rigid and hereditary, blending with the jati (caste) system, which is not the same as varna. This later distortion is widely acknowledged by Hindu reformers like Swami Vivekananda and B. R. Ambedkar, who distinguished the original philosophical varna system from the socially oppressive caste practices that developed much later. #sanatandharma #southasians #desi #varnasystem #fyp
