@jilliantaylorbrooks: When it comes to hosting, I live by a few small rules that have been passed down from the amazing women in my life who taught me to love gathering at home. I've also learned a few things along the way as I've hosted more often. Are there any rules that you swear by when hosting? #hostingtips #eventplanning #entertaining #partyhacks #hostinglife

How do you communicate the expectation you’re a shoes off home? My mom acted like I would be like asking our older relatives to do a somersault… I just think it’s the sanitary thing to do with a baby that crawls in the home.

The no shoes thing is big. I feel so uncomfortable wearing work socks to a no shoes gathering. Like I’ve been wearing these all day and my feet smell. Give me a heads up and I’ll use some baby powder before work or something.

I host all the time. I could not possibly care any less whether or not you choose to wear shoes in my house. I own a vacuum and a mop. I want people to be comfortable, and if they’re more comfortable in their shoes, then I hope they leave them on. that said, I have lived in countries where taking off shoes is expected and is the cultural norm. And I’m happy to remove my shoes.

my tips: rent your plates, glasses & serving dishes from caterers. surpsingly affordable! have visible trash cans & people will clean up after themselves. have small plates for wine keys, serving spoons. if ppl see that a tool has a home, they usually put it back where they found it.

I wish I could send #3 to my mom in law because she’ll invite us over for dinner and it won’t be ready until like an hour after we get there 😭

I’m a no shoes household, but if I’m having people over I just let it go and mop after. I’m also morally opposed to carpet, so this helps with clean up.

love these, I wish more people knew how to host. i've been invited to too many get togethers where I didn't know anyone, and the host never introduced us, and just left us to stand to the side awkwardly lol

when i have people over, we’re usually outside. i convert from a no-shoe to a shoe-friendly home bc i hate making them take their shoes off lolol

Also.. if your guests don’t know each other, arrange the table so they all have people to talk to. And use place cards. It’s a lost art

This is all so accurate. Pristine bathroom and kitchen say it all without saying a word.

I agree so much with number 1 and 2. I deep clean my fridge/freezer, pantry, and utensils the weekend prior to the event, I also have a strong scent for when people first walk in. Sets the tone.

I feel very strongly that a “no shoes” household should not be enforcing that rule when they host a gathering. Cleaning your floors before and after the party is just part of hosting.

To #3 I say plan well - tell people 30-40 minutes later than you think you could possibly be ready. Those effects will come early, even if they’re never early to anything.
