Hot take: the barbell back squat isn't the problem… ego lifting is. The barbell back squat is one of the best strength builders out there. Injuries usually come from trying to max out weight rather than focusing on good form, controlled reps, and progressive overload.

At 59 It was hard but I had to stop doing them. And before anyone says “It’s just that your form is bad” No, it’s not. You get old and shit starts to wear out. I can still squat light weight of course, but to move the weight I need for overload isn’t worth the pain to my back
