Do you consider Gothic a genre? I study Literature at university, and here in Brazil we tend to refer to the Gothic as an aesthetic rather than a genre in itself, but it is interesting to see how perspectives on something can change depending on the place.

I read "Great Expectations" and as a person who is also interested in sociology I spot soooo much class critique in that book. I read it quite analytically and absolutely love it.

I love del toro but his Frankenstein was so disappointing in terms of faithfulness to the book. he switched up victor’s entire backstory which was like…really important. My fave adaptation will always be the 2004 hallmark one lol

In Spain, we don’t read Dickens at school. In fact, we are only told about his work. We know him as a naturalist. Interesting take for sure (never would have imagined Dickens as a gothic writer although The Christmas Carol is coming now to my mind)!

Absolutely love Dickens's novels! He knew the poor districts of London so well. As a boy, he had also had to work in a blacking factory because of his father's financial difficulties and he tried hard to raise awareness of social conditions through his books.
