This spring the state issued a preliminary decision to lease 715.4 acres of state land for a gas fired compute campus before the Legislature had written a single statute on who pays for the power. More than 500 comments came in. Fewer than a dozen were supportive. So the diagnosis is right. There is a hole but the instrument lands hardest on the one facility that makes its own power at the wellhead and never competes with a household for a kilowatt hour. The honest limit on our own argument is that Anchorage is one borough and that lease is state land so what Alaska has is a patchwork, not a process. The missing option isn't no rule. It's a rule conditioned on where the power comes from rather than on whether the building is new. Seventeen people are running for governor.
