This is not true. Russia and the US already split the territories of Japan very evenly at this point. The deal was that Russia gets to take Manchuria and the Kuril islands, while the US takes the main islands of Japan (Honshu, Okinawa, Shikaku, Hokkaido) and Russia was never intending to break this deal. The US would never walk away after WW2 with and let Russia take all the cake.
