Texas rangers and cattlemen who found themselves in a saddle frequently also seemed to prefer wearing side arms in a cross draw for easier access while in the saddle. Cattlemen also did that so when they were dallying their rope off onto their saddle horn would bump the side arm or have it get in the way while working cattle

An easier explanation is that its simply easier to draw cross body when you're in a saddle. Not only that, your hand sits in a natural position near your pistol when you're holding reins or the saddlehorn.

why not just switch the side the sword and revolver is on? 1700s is my forte so im used to seeing pistols on the saddle, and swords on the left hip
