Quick question, did you check to airflow direction? Believe it or not, they have a front and back. Also, if that ladder is no longer available, look into telescoping ladder. Stow away real easy, takes care of most needs amd much easier to carry. Otherwise, good job 👍🏻!

as for why the filter is on the ceiling.... my guess is you live in a hot area, hot air rises so that way the hottest air in the house is going thru your AC instead of the coldest(what it would draw if it was down low) this will keep the house cooler
