if you never teach your kid to "fight" back against you, then how will they how to when they are an adult and NEED to fight back against someone?

I wish I had realized this when I was younger and parenting my now grown children. They’ve been so susceptible to abuse by others 😔

Yeah my parents would tell they got me my “favorite” and it was always my siblings 😭 I knew its bc getting mine wrong wasn’t a big deal I’d take it. Had to, we didn’t have time for two tantrums. Eventually you just don’t care to have a preference

My 14 yo, I’m always teaching her that rules can be broken and perfection is not actually the standard.

It feels counterintuitive to teach a sweet angel sent from heaven how to navigate the unfairness of the earth. I’ve had to learn to help my older son through it

OMG, yes! I was raised Mormon in 80s and 90s. I left the church when I was 17. It was drilled into me to “choose the right” and that it wasn’t safe to think differently from my family. I am 42 years old now and I struggle so much with feeling connected with people if I don’t agree with them or they don’t agree with me about something. It really messes with your head when you encounter people that will take advantage of this.

My oldest is like this, my husband and I were always trying to get them to rebel a little bit.

The real world requires a little rebellion. Even if it's just for our own internal peace

also just crazy to hear you say that having preferences is essential because my parents HATED that and would bully us into liking the same things or just ignored what we liked

A little naughtiness is a normal part of being a person. They need to know that your love is not fragile

idk i mean im 19 and at college and i never even wanted or desired to do things that were deemed as “bad”. partially because i saw it happen in my own family. i don’t drink or smoke or do drugs, (never even tried the latter two, i do not want to ever!) never even wanted to sneak out (had nowhere to go anyway) and i don’t want a relationship until the peers around me can match my maturity lmao. i’m only interested in serious long term relationships. i was also emotionally abused and neglected as a kid. my parents never put pressure on me academically and i was still excelling. i guess i am just smart and protecting myself from bad experiences. explain that ig
