that's why I can barely read romance books anymore. the reason is simple really: these authors have a lot of internalized misogyny and it comes out in their works. to them the MMCs aren't being misogynistic, they think it's normal behavior. ironically enough I find that romance, the very genre written by women for women, has the worst case of misogyny when it comes to romantic relationships. it's ALL patriarchal dynamics: dominant man/ submissive woman (especially s*xually), confident man/ shy woman, powerful man/ less powerful woman, the man had more money, is more competent, intelligent etc. I could go on. essentially the man must always be superior to his female love interest in most ways. romance books normalize and promote patriarchal gender norms and I'll die on this hill.

Valid question, i think it's important for people to separate fantasy from reality. You can like something in books, but when that transfers to real life, you are risking your safety

A lot of media portrays it desirable that the macho man only softens for the female lead, so a lot of fantasy is self inserts of “taming” the male while he still is unkind to others because it makes the lead special. I really hate the pick me trope. I don’t mind misogynistic men in books but I do want consequences to lay out for them that could help them grow later. They should change not for the lead, but because he genuinely wants to be a better person.

what worries me is that ppl genuinely don’t seem to critique what they love to read/watch. if i realize it has problematic stuff, but i still like it for some reason, it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment to recognize it’s problematic. i don’t need to defend it. if i like a toxic ship, i can just go “something about this fictional dynamic is still entertaining to me, but it’s NOT irl couple goals at all”.

Yes!! Also 99% of the time the male mc will cheat or be with several women during their break but for some reason the female mc for some reason must stay loyal, “can’t find anyone else to replace him” or just can’t have her fun or get payback

Undermining the misogyny only upholds it. Minimization and indifference are that serious. It is what enables, allows for it, and is a part of how it all starts.

Because a lot of romance authors and readers really do love that stuff. You definitely have to dig for feminist romance. That’s why I only read books by leftist, feminist and/or queer authors.

Internalized misogyny since so many of the writers are women :( because that’s all many women have in their real life and they have to romanticize it to cope. They havent truly interrogated being male-centered and why they are and all the oppressive systems of misogyny bc it’s very terrifying to do so, you start seeing it everywhere and realize you’re being/been mistreated, abused, and traumatized. Too scary to do that, so let’s just romanticize it! A lot of women don’t know a better relational dynamic or what a healthy one is with a man bc of our culture. It’s fucking everywhere, it’s in EVERY single booktok creator’s recommended books, there’s not a single exception. Not one. It’s so exhausting being a woman in the romance space who sees all the instances of it and doesn’t want to be repeatedly harmed by media.

I don’t even read romance and I feel like this comes from the way that people talk about men’s misogyny as something innate within men that they cannot change so that even when imagining a fictional idealized version of a man the only flaws they can place on him to make him seem real are rooted in misogyny.

If anything it only reinforces misogyny by allowing for it and accepting it. We have to look at how propaganda works. It is to spread the seeds of ideology that can be watered and take root. It all starts out small and grows step by step. So it gives it legitimacy, a platform, normalizes it and desensitizes you.

Many women find it acceptable since are surrounded by the many forms of discrimination/ violence in society since birth. So woman must deconstruct and unpack everything they have learned, think they know and do. To help yourself become more aware and educated for this process start with a basic cultural anthropology textbook!

There are two different critiques about the romance genre that I think sometimes get swapped for one another. The one where people look down on romance as a genre as 'lesser than' bc it caters primarily to women and I think the argument does prevent a stronger critique on some of the very problematic writing found in romance, which includes the internalized misogyny.

This new trend of wanting all literature and films to have perfect characters with no personal flaws is annoying. If everyone is good, moral and they always make the right decisions, where is the conflict in the story?
