my father met someone who had gone to the church for refuge and was struck there for the siege. he wasn't involved in intifada, but he was a young man and Israel was just arresting all the young men.

I recommend you watch “The Siege of Bethlehem” it a documentary produced by PBS Frontline, that is if you can find it. I watched it many years ago and it was my introduction to this event.

Israel says it has the right to exist. Fine. Let’s go back to the source. In 1947, the United Nations passed United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181, known as the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine. That resolution proposed two states in Palestine: a Jewish state and an Arab Palestinian state. If Israel claims legitimacy from that resolution, then the same resolution sets limits. It did not grant Israel the West Bank, it did not grant Israel the Gaza Strip, and it did not grant Israel the Golan Heights. Those territories were taken later by war and occupation. The resolution also implied a Palestinian state, and international law later affirmed the right of Palestinian refugees to return, most clearly in United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194. So the question is simple: If Israel claims its legitimacy from the United Nations, then it must also respect the same United Nations decisions. That means respecting the borders of the original partition and recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people. You cannot accept the resolution that created you and reject the resolutions that limit you. Justice cannot be selective.
