When I was 18, I had an alarm clock that I set up every night so I could wake up for school. But I swear the mom I had at the time, felt threatened by it. She would wake me up 1 minute before the alarm went off every morning. I asked her why she did that. She would say, Just making sure your up. 🤨 So one time, I changed the alarm clock to 5 minutes before the original time, I got a chance to wake up before her. It made her mad. If she wanted to be my alarm so badly, why did she buy me one to begin with??!! 🤦🤷

How's her mental health? Always concerned when kids are so specific on you not checking in them...

I think being woken up by a parent is just stressful in general. Allow her the freedom to wake herself up, and start her morning as she needs to start it. ❤️

I am jealous. I would LOVE for my teenagers to use the alarms on their phones.

They’re exercising autonomy and building independence - and that they left this note means they feel safe and have been taught the skills to do so -which is so awesome 💖

I encourage my kids to use alarm clocks probably from the time they were eight, they were doing their own laundry at nine. 17 is one year away from being an adult. I encouraged as much independence as possible.

That’s awesome of you for respecting her boundaries and giving her the space to show you she is capable of doing all you have taught her.

My parents did not wake us up. We were responsible for it ourselves once like middle school and high school age. Now as an adult I never hit snooze and am up with my alarm.

I’ve just realised years and years of me asking that I not be woken up (because I also set an alarm) was boundary-stomping. Mind blown!

When I was a teen I bought an alarm clock…my mother knew of said alarm clock and would intentionally wake me up before my alarm went off… let your child wake up themselves, if they are able. Nothing says wanting to have control over someone like controlling their sleep.

If I had to be up at 7am, my mum would come in at 6am and tell me that it’s 8am. Even when I had my alarm set. 😂

My parents did not wake me up in hs. I set my own alarm an got ready. Either I bought breakfast at school or sometimes my grandma would make it for me. Not once did I ever oversleep.

I'm 37 and when visiting my Mum, she still will come in and tell me it's 7:30am, when it's 7am. She would wake me up all through school & it was honestly so damaging to my health because I needed every minute of sleep I could get. Let kids learn to manage their own sleep schedules. As long as there's no issues with fatigue or lateness, I say well done to her for communicating clearly.

my daughter has her alarm to get up for school and I know what time it goes off, but dont ever wake her up beforehand. one day she was still asleep 20 minutes after her alarm was meant to go off and I went in to wake her up with good intentions. I forgot the school was closed for a strike that day. I still feel bad and apologised heaps. she went back to sleep and didnt care because she knows I didn't do it in any harmful way.

I used to hate when I had alarms set and knew what time I was getting up and my parents would knock on my door to wake me up WHEN I WAS ALREADY GOING TO GET UP ON MY OWN TIME
