“Where you’re from versus where you can breathe” very beautifully said 💗

Thank you for sharing this cos it’s so important to hear the parts of one’s culture that aren’t always portrayed in the media. Every culture has its strengths and challenges, and we grow so much when we’re open to learning from each other. Keep sharing your perspective!

Same. A short visit to see family is enough for me now.

the age thing is still so weird to me… like two guys born on 00-01-01 and 00-12-30 can be same-age friends but 00-12-30 and 01-01-01 can‘t bc they‘re born in different years even tho they‘re only 2 days apart?

this “빨리빨리“ culture reminded me of a Korean who was on a vacation here in the Philippines. We were both part of a island hopping tour. In one of the islands, there was a cliff jumping activity and everyone was cheering the jumpers on. I overheard the korean say 빨리빨리 because the guy took a while to jump. 😅

i really want to try to live in korea for a year or two, but i grew up in a culture where hierarchy and that kind of "respect" practically does not exist (we dont have formal language at all, call teachers/bosses by first names, etc), so i worry that i would not be able to keep up with such a strict social hierarchy and unintentionally be rude to/offend everyone i meet😅

This is such an earnest and real take about Korea and leaving here as a foreigner.

The 빨리빨리 culture got me when I traveled solo last year there first time. In subways and buses, I constantly feel anxious. I am usually good at navigating public transpo but what I experience there is energetically challenging.

your last words, I truly love what they summarize. I enjoyed my trips to SK, but yes, to live n work there, it could be suffocating.

it’s a bittersweet experience not quite being able breathe in the place i thought id call home after reconnecting with roots and wanting to plant my own here. but i don’t regret taking the chance on myself and this experience despite how hard it’s been basically initially going through a whole immigration process lol. but have decided to move back to where i can breathe

I also think being a foreigner vs native is responsible for this. In Korea I don’t deal with much of this because I’m obviously not a native and never will be, so people don’t hold you to the same standards. No one cared about my financial background, family or age, and there was no pressure to fit beauty standards that I never would because I’m a ‘visitor’.
