The ending in the movie with the cat disappearing isn’t in the book and I think the film makers just confused everyone adding it in. What they are suggesting (and what the book brilliantly conveys) is that Coralines current journey/ mission is over, the cat was her guide when she needed him but now that she has defeated the other mother & faced her fears, he is no longer required. The cat was there for her growth but now she stands on her own- it’s very ‘coming of age’ and symbolic of the magic retreating as she grows. Ahhh I love Coraline so much x

I always just assumed that the cat disappearing is just how it moves between worlds. Coraline is a complete story, it never fells like the end is "too good to be true," it show the logical and direct result of her overcoming her struggle.

I think the moment with the cat simply shows one of the tears between the two world the cat used for travel, coming and going as he pleased without need of the tunnel.
