Narcissistic mothers often say, “I’m your mom, you need to treat me with respect,” while speaking to you in ways that slowly chip at your confidence for years. Then the moment you react, set boundaries, or speak up like an adult, you’re suddenly ungrateful and disrespectful. But what they want isn’t a child with their own voice, they want supply, a built in cheerleader whose job is to keep them feeling important. So you grow up walking on eggshells, afraid to have your own opinions because everything turns into a fight. They act like they deserve a medal for doing the bare minimum: food, shelter, clothes. But you can love your parent and still admit they hurt you. You can respect motherhood and still say that was abuse. And if someone is toxic, even family, you’re allowed to create distance, even no contact if that’s what peace costs. 📕 I wrote a book Between Heaven & Earth for those untangling love from pain, learning that honoring your heart sometimes means setting boundaries with the people who raised you.
