Yes safety chains should be crossed from trailer to hitch as it creates a cradle if your trailer falls off.

I don’t understand why people refuse to cross their chains literally takes a singular extra second and can save you and your trailer from flipping

No, no, no! That's not what the chain is for! The chain should pull a pin to activate the trailers brakes and then "safely" disconnect

Like my parents say, if something comes with a safety precaution BUILT ONTO IT, use it. Better safe than sorry.

The thing that made this go off was probably the weight distribution and no lock pin at the ball connection. Chains are just to keep the trailer attached to you so that you don’t cause other major damage around you.

Next time do as I do. Hook and latch hitch, then using jack raise rear of tow vehicle, to ensure the trailer is properly latched. Never had a trailer come unhitched

Thank you for using the chains at all, my dad was parked in town and a truck crossed o er a train track and the trailer came off jumped the curve and the trailer, tongue went through the window, where my dad‘s head was, cop said if dad would’ve had a seatbelt on he’d be dead. Use the safety chains folks and use them correctly.

As someone who drove a tow truck and transported heavy machinery, you need to cross the chain. Its not a myth. Its supposed to keep it off the ground and prevent any more damage from happening.

Crossing your chains is not a myth. It prevents the trailer from hitting the asphalt and causing sparks. No it doesn’t prevent the trailer from hitting the back of your vehicle that is unfortunately just physics. But this also could’ve been prevented with a simple pin in the latch on your hitch. But oh I don’t know what I’m talking about i haven’t been hauling trailers for years or anything neither has my father and grandfather.

It’s not about crossing them it’s about length. U won’t them long enough to hook up but short enough so

Well, almost. If they'd been installed and connected properly there wouldn't have been all that damage.

Crossing your chains would’ve prevented you from dragging the front of your trailer on the ground, also could have prevented it from smacking the truck if you had your breakaway setup right.

Towing with a Tesla and hooking the chains wrong is all the more reason to not complain, it was inevitablely going to happen.

Cross the chains, stops trailer from getting ground. Less damage and more control overall
