When the response is yelling, fear, or shame, the message can quietly become: “I am a problem when I make a mistake.” Repeated often enough, those moments can form the roots of shame and sometimes what we later call trauma. But when the response is calm, steady, and connected, the message becomes: “It was an accident. I’m still safe. I’m still loved.” Trauma is not created by accidents. It is often shaped by how alone, afraid, or misunderstood someone feels in the aftermath. Moments like this shape identity far more than perfection ever could. This is what a self regulated parent looks like.
