@coltenbarnaby: In order to do theology, you have to understand why it’s different than biblical studies. The conflation of the two often leads to abuse of the Scripture itself and rigid Dogma that misses the whole point of what many of the Church fathers were actually trying to do. #exvangelical #deconstruction #christiantiktok
Colton, have you ever read any Walter Wink? If so, what are your thoughts? I've done a lot of reading into philosophy (focusing on critical theory), but I'm trying to find a starting place to explore theology.

Loving this. I always used to say, theologians don't study god, they study the study of god. they study what other theologians have asserted about god, and then reason through the implications of that, especially when filtered through the dogma of their own personal faith based beliefs. It's as if biologists were to study life, while having no evidence for the existence of life, yet speculating what it exactly is meant by "life", and what it is like, and what it thinks of the biologists studying it. the philosophy of religion is a better starting point, as it allows for the question of whether god exists, before we dedicate ourselves to researching it through anything but reliable epistemological methods. the cognitive science of religion is one step up from there, as it explains why we are prone to inventing gods in the first place.

That is another mistake people make: confusing Dogma and Theology. The latter is scholarship, the former turns into to divisiveness.

I’m sorry but there is no reason that it couldn’t be reduced to proposition, maybe we don’t have a powerful or expressive enough formal language to do so yet, but there is no reason we shouldn’t be.

Honestly this is a great take, however, in the mind of a zealous believer: how dare you say such sacriligious things, repent lol....

Right on, this sounds aligned with orthodox and/or Episcopalian theology. Would you agree? I like how you’re talking about theological exploration though, appreciate your perspective dude 🤙🏾

Close. Biblical studies will be driven by one’s theological assumptions. No one does biblical scholarship in a metaphysical vacuum.

Karl Barth speaks of this in his criticism of literalism. That being that our vocabulary and language can define God as He is, as if He is some static scientific fact, rather than, well, God.

That’s why criticism of rapture theology solely on the fact that it was developed recently in the 1800s is a weak argument.

Lost in Thought :
The average American adult reads at a 7th- to 8th-grade level, with roughly 54% of adults (aged 16-74) reading below a 6th-grade level. About 21% of U.S. adults are considered functionally illiterate, meaning they struggle with basic, everyday reading tasks. Only 12% of adults reach high (Level 4/5) proficiency.
