AI in radiology has been around since the 90s and it is still quite bad. Improved, yes but far from replacing radiologist. I think AI in the next 20 years can help radiologists with the demand of increasing studies being ordered but definitely not replaced. There are other fields in medicine and not in medicine that are at a higher risk.

Millennial & Gen Z physicians really got the double shaft of upfront absurd medschool costs, laughable salary not keeping up with inflation, full blown midlevel creep, boomer docs selling out to PE, razor tight margins / zero cash flow on any accessible real estate or investment prospects; and now instead of a light at the end of the tunnel, AI engulfs our careers. Meanwhile, we have the softest representation of any industry… we’re cooked

My brother in Christ we have had computers “interpreting EKGs” for 40 years and they are still not replacing cardiologists reading them. Healthcare systems have spent 10s of billions of dollars and we still can’t open a CXR within an electronic health record. We are FAR FAR FAR away from AI replacing us…..

The AI will be excellent at guideline based medicine, and mediocre at individualized patient-centered shared decision making. The connection and empathy of a real human to understand the values and preferences of a patient is not replicable by AI.

What about AI in medical administration? That’s where AI can improve medicine and reduce costs. Way too many people who “work in medicine” without being involved in patient care.

tbh we should all focus on AI replacing CEOs and hospital administration first. they're the most expensive healthcare cost to begin with

I’m thinking 5 to 10 years is too far out. I think it will happen faster than that. Exponential progress is always underestimated.

I would like to see AI do a physical exam on a baby or a toddler. Same AI that makes up studies when asked a specific clinical question. Or misses the most common in the differential diagnosis of a fairly common Peds scenario. And notes written with AI are the least informative.

driving tech is really bad. so not good analogy, and AI makes up hallucinating, who can you sue if it makes fake diagnosis

Sorry I believe your time line is wrong. It will be much faster than 6-10 years, I believe it will be more so 18-24 months.

Be wary of companies that bring in their enterprise AI systems. Those are meant to track troubleshooting and thinking processes to train the AI to do that on its own down the line.

Hmm interesting… you mentioned that 10 years from now, we’re gonna be able to access an Al physician and now visit the ED. However, just because you might know the diagnosis doesn’t mean that you have access to other tools, labs, tests, and modifications.

as an outpatient pediatrician, I do not see how AI could take over my job; I do so.much.more. than diagnose diseases. I am a parenting coach, sleep coach, behavior coach, public health advocate, therapist, etc. I have important relationships with my families, and I don't think families would feel comfortable with a robot or computer doing these things
