@dr.rickpescatore: Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency is widespread, rampant, and a public health emergency. Pain, fatigue, nausea, and more—all can be traced to thiamine deficiency!
RD here- Thiamine occurs naturally in meat, whole grains, some vegetables. Along with the food supply deficiency, unfortunately, Americanize diet relies heavily on processed foods and thiamine is lost during this process. You need thiamine to use carbohydrates, and if those carbohydrates don’t have thiamine replenishment then that will cause the deficiency. Some causes of vitamin B1 deficiencies include high sugar intake, high alcohol intake, high tannin intake (coffee and tea).

Ob/gyn here, and I'm seeing a *ton* of iron deficiency that wasn't there a decade ago. I haven't been checking thiamine unless people have really bad hyperemesis, but I will now.

COVID depletes Thiamine! Followed a story of a teenage girl in my town who had long covid and ended up in so much pain she was unable to walk or talk. Received treatment at the spero clinic, one of which was replenishing thiamine. She is fully functional again!

Psych NP here. I tested my son for every deficiency under the son for his schizoaffective disease and the ONLY thing he was deficient in was thiamine and severely deficient.

I read that replenishing thiamine might help 'heavy legs' (which I have but have never explained to anyone because it sounds weird - but going upstairs, my legs feel winded. Heavy. Like they have no gas to do it.) I'm so curious to see if this changes now.

i hate the “it’s plentiful in food sources, so you can’t have it!!” argument. i work in mental health. The majority of people I see only eat potato chips or other snack foods for 100% of their diet, including high-functioning individuals just coming in for social work referrals. *I* only eat a waffle most days, which contains 0 b vitamins. You have no idea how bad most people’s diets are. They’re not even getting the foods we’ve lobbied to fortify

It’s easy to be low when one has celiac disease 🙋🏻♀️or another issue with the gut and absorption. Fortification is only effective if you have a gut that can properly absorb and use it.

It's the soil. It's been over farmed and no longer has the minerals and vitamins that we need. Soil is going barren all over the world.

The soil is depleted of nutrients. That is why our food supply is lacking these things.

My body is not able to metabolize it properly, so I have to take cocarboxylase/thiamine pyrophosphate. Almost all doctors have thought I was crazy.

if animals and humans are all deficient, doesn’t that mean the normal range is incorrect? Or did animals and humans previously have a higher level, and if so, why have they gone down?

I have MTHFR gene mutation and take a methylated folate/b12 vitamin along with adding lots of different beans and leafy greens to my diet. Are there any reasons why a regular b complex wouldn’t supply enough usable B1 to the body?
