@mareez20100: In the Gospel according to Matthew, chapters 5–7, Yeshua ascends a mountain&delivers what has become known as the Sermon on the Mount. At its opening stand the Beatitudes blessings that overturn common assumptions about power, success&righteousness. Matthew presents this moment with deep symbolic weight. Yeshua goes up the mountain, sits down as a rabbi would&begins to teach. To a Jewish audience steeped in Torah, the image is unmistakable: a new Moses-like figure speaking words of covenant life from a mountain. The Beatitudes begin: “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” In Hebrew thought, “blessed” (ashrei) carries the sense of deep flourishing, a state of alignment with God’s will. The “poor in spirit” are not merely financially poor, but those who recognize their spiritual need before the Holy One. In the Tanakh, humility and dependence upon God are marks of true righteousness. Yeshua affirms that the kingdom belongs not to the self-sufficient, but to the humble. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Mourning in Jewish tradition is not only personal grief but sorrow over sin and exile—both individual and national. The prophets spoke of comfort coming to Zion after repentance. Yeshua’s words echo Isaiah’s promise that God will console His people. Comfort is covenant restoration. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” This directly reflects Psalm 37:11. Meekness in biblical language is not weakness but controlled strength, a refusal to grasp power unjustly. In a land occupied by Rome, the promise of inheriting the earth would have sounded radical. Yeshua reframes inheritance not as conquest but as trust in divine justice. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Righteousness (tzedakah) in Jewish understanding includes justice, faithfulness&covenant loyalty. To hunger for righteousness is to crave God’s order in the world. The imagery suggests deep desire—not casual interest but urgent longing. Yeshua promises satisfaction to those whose deepest appetite is for God’s will. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” Mercy (chesed) stands at the heart of Torah. The God of Israel reveals Himself as abundant in lovingkindness. Those who reflect that mercy participate in His character. The Beatitudes consistently show reciprocity: what one embodies in faith becomes the measure of what one receives. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Purity in Hebrew thought is not merely ritual but inner integrity. The Shema commands loving God with all the heart. The promise of seeing God recalls Moses’ encounter and the priestly blessing. It speaks of intimacy with the Divine Presence. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Shalom is more than absence of conflict; it is wholeness, harmony, restored relationship. In Jewish expectation, the age of redemption would be marked by peace. Those who actively pursue reconciliation mirror the character of the Father. Finally, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew’s community likely knew persecution.Yeshua does not present suffering as failure but as participation in the prophetic tradition. The prophets were rejected, yet faithful. The kingdom belongs to those who endure in covenant loyalty. Matthew structures these blessings in a way that frames the kingdom as both present&future. The first&last Beatitudes share the same promise: “theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” forming a literary inclusio. Between them unfolds a portrait of the ideal disciple—humble, compassionate, just, pure, and steadfast. In giving the Beatitudes, Yeshua is not abolishing Torah but deepening its intent. Immediately after, he declares that he has not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it. The blessings describe the inner posture required to live the commandments to their fullest meaning.
