But here’s the truth few outside this world see: Every day brings a new challenge. Weather, debt, market prices, sheer exhaustion... recent studies have highlighted the mental health crisis in the farming community. Farmers are reported to be 3.5 times more likely to commit su*c*de compared to the general population. In some regions, this rate is even higher; for instance, in Indiana farmers face rates up to 6 times the national average. And some farmers, feeling out of options, see one final act as a way to protect their families—believing that maybe a life insurance policy is worth more than their continued struggle. Sit with that for a moment. Farmers are human beings. And like all of us, they deserve support, compassion, and recognition. They’re among the most under-appreciated people in our society—even as they do the backbreaking work of feeding us all. I don’t expect this post to go viral.
