Episode 3 SOME PEOPLE WILL LAUGH AT YOUR BEGINNING—UNTIL THEY SEE WHERE IT TAKES YOU. When I started Djoannie Store, there was nothing glamorous about it. I started with the little I got from my parents and whatever I could make from fulfilling orders from my fashion business. It was truly a humble beginning. I remember starting with just a dozen products. Then somehow, one dozen became more. More became a carton. And slowly, we kept growing. But the growth didn't happen overnight. There were days I was excited. There were days I made good sales. There were also days I didn't feel like showing up at all. I had losses. I had doubts. I had people watching and wondering what I was doing. I remember someone asking me during the difficult period when my fashion business was struggling: “What are you doing at home?” That question could have made me feel small. But I had already made up my mind that I was going to take one step at a time. I wasn't going to spend my energy explaining my dream to everybody. Because the truth is, some people who ask questions aren't asking because they want to help you. Sometimes, they are simply waiting to mock the attempt. So I kept learning. I kept showing up. I kept improving. I kept taking the next step. And honestly, I wasn't always sure where the road was leading. But I knew I couldn't sit still waiting for everything to make sense. Sometimes you have to start before the full picture becomes clear. Don't be ashamed of starting with one product when someone else has a warehouse. Don't be ashamed of starting from your house. Don't be ashamed of selling to five customers when someone else has thousands. Don't be ashamed of learning from scratch. Your beginning is not your destination. Identify what you want. Learn what you need to learn. Take the first step. Then take another. And please, don't let gossip stop you. Because when you are struggling and urgently looking for ₦2,000, the people laughing at your small beginning may not be the ones coming to rescue you. Chase your goals without apology—as though your future depends on it. It may not make sense to everybody today. Keep going. One day, you'll look back and understand why you had to start exactly where you started. Now tell me honestly: What is one dream or business idea you've been postponing because you're afraid of what people will say?
