@thinkveil5: Have you ever wondered why some people struggle to throw things away—even items that seem useless? The psychology of hoarding goes deeper than clutter. It’s linked to emotional attachment, loss aversion, trauma responses, and decision fatigue. In this video, we break down the real psychological reasons behind hoarding behavior and why letting go can feel unsafe. Understanding human behavior helps us build empathy, not judgment. I was like that, until, 10 years ago, when in a business conference, I heard this psychologist explaining that hoarding material things is just a reflection of hoarding emotions and feelings inside us. I didn’t want to let go so many things just because of every single thing explained in this animation. Like some of you, the question always pop up: “what if I need it later” or after I got rid of something, later I needed it. However, right after I heard this psychologist, I got home, and I started to get rid of things without thinking “what if”. That was the beginning of rewiring my neurons. For the last 10 years, I adapted this rule, if for the whole year I did not wear or use it, it is out of the house. So at the end of the year I do a deep cleaning of every closet, drawer, shelf, containers, etc. My apartment looks clean, spacious, uncluttered, and I feel so, so light and free. Trust me, even today, after 10 years that I started this transformation, time to time, that evil thinking pop up “I shouldn’t get rid of it”. But I learned to ignore it, and my faith has helped me a lot. In Mathew 6:19-20 the Lord says "19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves dig through and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not dig through nor steal." this is an excellent explanation, and take it further I'm going to just point out that if you're a Gen xer or a baby boomer, you had parents and grandparents who never threw anything away and probably almost never bought anything new. They borrowed and bartered and exchanged things among themselves because they were precious. fast forward to the credit card generations and we have an overabundance of availability coupled with manufacturing of items that do not last. so somewhere in the in-between our people who want things to last forever and hang on to things that they want to fix or finish. so it's not necessarily a psychological void that causes this, it can also be a mental brain path that was created by the people who raised you that is hard to overcome.

The most freeing thing I ever did was sell off all of my stagnate stuff and start over. I now buy way less and keep nothing I’m not using. I rewired by brain I think

Wow... I had a REALLY hard time trying to clean my house and TRY to throw "things" away today. I was able to toss a few small things here and there but then got overwhelmed and ended up on the couch watching TV 😭

I'm not a hoarder but I've made significant progress getting rid of things I don't need. Being gone away from home for the majority of the year, traveling extensively, makes it a little difficult. This past year I came home for a month and took that time for myself to decompress. I did get rid of some stuff.
