@everything7870: .Kandovan is an ancient village in northwestern Iran, famous for its inhabited cave houses carved into volcanic rock, often likened to a quieter version of Cappadocia in Turkey. Where it is and what it looks like Kandovan lies in East Azerbaijan province, in the Sahand mountain range near the city of Osku, about an hour from Tabriz. The village is built into cone-shaped towers of volcanic tuff formed by eruptions of Mount Sahand and later eroded into beehive-like pinnacles. Locally, the individual cone dwellings are called “karan,” and many rise several storeys high, with rooms, windows, and even bridges carved into the stone. History and habitation Archaeologists suggest habitation in the area goes back several thousand years, though estimates range from roughly 3,000 to claims of up to 7,000 years. A widely cited tradition holds that the current village was shaped by people fleeing Mongol invasions, who hid in the rocks and then settled permanently. Remarkably, Kandovan is still inhabited today by over a hundred families, making it one of the very few cave or cliff villages in the world that remains a living settlement rather than a museum site. Daily life and local features The rock homes are naturally insulated, staying cool in summer and relatively warm in winter, which makes them highly energy-efficient dwellings. Residents engage in agriculture, gardening, and handicrafts; the village is known for products such as mountain honey, nuts, and medicinal plants sold in its small bazaar. There is also a cave mosque, the Karan mosque, and nearby mineral springs whose low-lime, cold water is locally believed to have health benefits, especially for kidney issues. Tourism and visiting Kandovan is now a notable rural tourism destination, marketed as Iran’s “Cappadocia,” with guesthouses and even cave-style hotels inside the rock formations. It is typically visited as a day trip from Tabriz, with hiking opportunities in the surrounding Sahand mountains and views of snow-capped peaks for much of the year. Spring and autumn are generally recommended as the best seasons, since summers can be hot and winters snowy and challenging for moving around the steep alleys. #kandovan #Iran #ancient #travel #aroundtheworld
