maskingATNpain :
My parents don't want to know, and I am "out of line" and a "fear monger" if I try to tell them, and it breaks my heart.

Also they have done a really good job with the "don't believe everything on the internet" people and discrediting social media as not actual news.

Hip-hop arrived as a formal revolution — a reinvention of what popular music could do with rhythm, voice, and found sound — and experimental hip-hop is the tradition that kept the revolution going after the mainstream had settled into its own conventions. Where commercial rap codified its formulas, experimental hip-hop treated those formulas as a starting point and then abandoned them: dismantling the beat, fracturing the bar, bending the vocal into something that no longer resembles performance as rap had previously understood it. It is not a single sound. It is a posture toward sound — a refusal to accept that hip-hop's formal possibilities have been exhausted. That posture has produced industrial dystopia in El-P's hands, abstract poetry dissolving into ambient texture with cLOUDDEAD, afrofuturist transmission in Shabazz Palaces, and pure sonic assault in Death Grips. It has produced grief records, outsider art, noise rap, and work so far underground it spent years reaching the surface. What connects this list is not genre but conviction: each of these records is made by someone who believed hip-hop could hold more than it was being asked to hold, and then proved it. The ten albums — eleven, counting El-P's essential double entry — span from 1997 to 2021 and represent something closer to a map than a canon. They enter the genre from every angle: the underground's confrontational edge, the avant-garde's formal obsessions, the solitary vision of the true outsider, the emotional rawness of music made in the aftermath of loss. Some of these records are abrasive. Some are desolate. Some are genuinely disorienting in ways that ask something real of the listener. All of them are evidence of what hip-hop becomes when it refuses to be comfortable. This is the starting point. Every record on this list will take you somewhere further. #music #hiphopmusic #experimentalhiphop #list #musictok
