I saw someone put the spool in a pan with hot water and feed it through a little hole so it is perfectly straight before you wind it again. But out on the water, in a pinch, this would come in clutch.

Just put the spool in a bowl of water and turn the reel sideways. The spool spins perfectly in the water and the loads properly. I use a small wet cloth to apply very minimal pressure as the line goes on.
