@cbsmornings: In the 1960s and 70s, more than 400,000 Cuban exiles poured into Miami to escape Fidel Castro’s dictatorship. Waiting for them was the city’s Freedom Tower, welcoming refugees as they began their new lives in the U.S. Two women who came to the U.S. as children shared what freedom felt like for their families: “We were going to make the country that opened its arms to us proud of us.” #immigration #cuba #miami #USAtoZ

Mind you.. this is still the same regime today. Since 1959 this has been the sad reality for many of us and our families.

I was fifteen when I left Cuba, with my little brother. We came alone because my parents were afraid the government would block my brother from leaving after reaching certain age and having to do military service. We were lucky it was only a nine months separation. It still hunts me the loneliness and sadness. I couldn’t even imagine years without our parents and grandparents.

My father came first. He served in the Bay of Pigs. Returned to Miami. My parents got married. My sister was born in 62 and I was born 67. My father was serving in the Vietnam war when I was born. Our family struggled after his return. But we are grateful to have been born in the US and for our parents sacrifices.

I am so grateful to my grandmother for leaving with my family in 1969. She worked her butt off. Without her we wouldn’t have the life the freedom we have. I’m proud to be Cuban and of heritage. But I’m also proud to be American. ¡Por Cuba libre! 🇨🇺🇺🇸
