When the first plane struck, the building lurched 20 feet before snapping back, and the air filled with the terrifying scent of burning jet fuel. While sighted colleagues looked out the windows in horror at the raining debris and smoke, Michael had to rely entirely on his other senses — and the steady, calm breathing of his guide dog, Roselle. For the next hour, the bond between man and dog was the only thing standing between life and death. As they descended 1,460 steps, Roselle stayed perfectly focused, ignoring the panicked crowds and the exhausted firefighters rushing past them into the heat. She even paused to lick a woman who was entering a state of panic. When they finally reached the street, the South Tower began its thunderous collapse. Michael was engulfed in a "waterfall" of glass, concrete, and toxic dust. Unable to see or breathe, he put his life completely in Roselle’s paws. She navigated him through the blinding debris and halted at the exact moment she found a subway entrance, leading him to the only source of breathable air left in the area. Roselle’s heroism that day saved Michael and many others who followed his lead down those stairs. Though she passed away in 2011, her legacy lives on as a testament to the intelligence and loyalty of service animals. He wrote a book about his experience in the towers and how Roselle helped him and countless others get out through the panic and smoke. It is one of the most emotional books I've ever read. And even though I read it in middle school I remember his story well into adulthood. I can't remember the title of the book but it had Roselle on the cover.

Wait I just moved to New York and when walking my dog I noticed this statue of a seeing eye dog in the park and it looks so scary realistic and we visit it everyday. I just realized It’s Roselle. Thank you because now we will continue to visit everyday.
