Unfortunately, the viral homeschool group (“ASL Theatre”) has lied to the hearing person asking about “shot” in their ASL translation. There is also a screenshot of a comment that says "I don't know ASL but I"m curious how they handled the triple entendre of 'my shot": an opportunity, an alcoholic drink, and of course, a gunshot.”. There is also a message that says “ASL Theatre lied to everybody about their translation” with an arrow pointing down to the ASL Theatre’s response saying ““yes different signs used! We also have differnet signs used for the various meanings of “rise up”.] [video cuts to a white man wearing a dark shirt. He is standing against a white wall.] Signplaying: Someone made this comment observing that the song being signed has the English word "shot", which has three meanings. That person asked how they handled all three meanings in their song signing. Just so you know, I have seen that video and those people who did the song signing did NOT translate all three meanings. They really should have done this one thing: recruit an expert signer who can translate an English triple entendre. Who has that skill? Well, someone named Jeremy Lee Stone. He has successfully translated a triple entendre in another song. I'm going to show it to you now. [video cuts to @jeremy.lee.stone signing an excerpt of Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl halftime song "Not Like Us"] @jeremy.lee.stone: Ain't you tired? Tryna strike a chord and it's probably A minor. [video cuts back to Signplaying] That video has the English phrase "a minor", which has three meanings in this specific song. All 3 meanings are clearly conveyed in the translation. First, I'm going to explain this to you. For the English phrase "strike a chord" -- one way to translate that is to use this ASL sign, which is typically associated with someone who is trying to prove a point. The reason this sign is selected for the English phrase "strike a chord" is that someone is trying to elicit an emotional reaction from me, and trying to convince me to agree with them. So with that sign I'm showing you right now, I am creatively modifying that sign by having my other hand push down that original sign. This modified sign means that someone has failed to prove their point to me. "You failed to evoke my emotions." "You failed to convince me to agree with you." "Your comment is no good. I'm pushing it down now." So, this modified sign means that someone's comment is trivial, or "minor", meaning insignificant. That relates to the first meaning of the English phrase "a minor". That sign modification is called this: "Creative negation using hand manipulation". There are variations to how I can sign this: I push your attempt away, I throw your attempt behind me, I suppress your attempt. So, with all the variations, why select this specific sign showing pushing down? It's because that sign relates to this technique. I'm going to explain more now.
