@onceuponatimein_history: So, if the sagas are true and Ivar the Boneless did have an issue with his legs... What theories have been suggested for the cause? #vikings #ivartheboneless #History #medicalhistory
I read a historical-fiction book that offered a slightly different, but equally plausible explanation for his nickname. Ivar was called The Boneless was due to his fluid form of fighting; twisting and turning around his opponents weapons so quickly it appeared that he had no bones. In addition, Scandinavian Vikings usually practiced infanticide when a child was born with a disability. The sagas that claimed he was disabled were written four to five centuries after he died.

With what I know of Viking naming traditions and my own ancestors being called “the brat” “the bastard” “the hated” etc. I’m gonna have to go with the mistranslation…no matter how I wish he was just a hyper mobile freak who messed with everyone’s head 😂

Well done on the scoliosis call! As someone with it, it’s still known as the Viking curse.

Would 6 ft be considered tall back then? Hasn’t the average height for people gone up over the centuries?

Are there really accounts of him being carried on a shield? Or is that just something movies and TV shows made up?

I will put up with Alex, I love Viking history. Also I know it may not be historically accurate, but I love the series Vikings. Ivar and Hvitserk are my favorite of the brothers!

Ooof as some who has HEDS or Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos I don’t feel boneless but I do feel disconnected.🦓 Also I would guess he didn’t have EDS because he would probably dislocate his shoulder and wrist in his sword arm quite a bit or at least bit more than his legs.
