When I started teaching, I was 22, had been dancing seriously for my whole life, and even got my BA in Dance. However, once I found myself actually teaching real kids in studios…I had all of those feelings described above. For years. As dancers, we’re highly trained and know a lot about dance!! But that doesn’t mean you’re able to pass that knowledge onto students. Teaching is a whole different artform. The unfortunate truth is: the majority of dancers who end up teaching aren’t really trained in HOW to. You’re just expected to figure it out on your own. And the business side of being a dance teacher? Figuring out your rates, negotiating, finding opportunities, marketing yourself? No one talks about that. But it doesn’t have to be this way, and that’s exactly why I started this account, and eventually built the Dance Teacher Intensive. I wanted to create the training I wish I had when I was wondering what to do in my classes, how to communicate with my students, and how to keep them engaged, respect me and not talk over me.
