In 1930, the barn became the site of the last public hanging in the state of Missouri when Lawrence Mabry was executed. Condemned inmates notoriously feared the gallows, which strictly featured 13 steps leading up and a noose tied with 13 loops. Tour guides and visitors report that the heavy, solid steel frames inside the cell blocks mysteriously slide or push flat against the walls on their own. Heavy iron cell doors left wide open by staff are frequently found securely shut and latched with no drafts or visitors present. Local folklore describes a dark, shadowy figure that materializes in the corridors, accompanied by loud phantom pounding echoing from inside locked cells.
