External Rotation “Backfist” - age 54, July 7, 2023, 7:08 pm 🌺 CAUTION: THIS VIDEO IS FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. THESE EXERCISES CAN BE DANGEROUS. The external rotation of my shoulders has gotten tight and weak to the point that I have trouble throwing a ball, so I’m focusing heavily on exercises that will improve this. I like this exercise because it transitions from an isolated external rotation into a shoulder abduction (upper arm moving laterally away from the body). This challenges the external rotation musculature farther down the kinetic chain and ends in a position that is functionally useful to me. With the arm against my torso, I externally rotate as far as I can, and then continue by simultaneously pushing my knuckles backwards and out to the side. To return, I adduct my shoulder (bring the upper arm back to the starting position against my torso) and then eccentrically reset the forearm to the starting position. Not only does this allow for a prolonged and more comprehensive use of the external rotators, but the long lever created by the fully extended arm imposes a lot of anti-rotational torque on the body that strongly affect the obliques.
