5 Things You Must Eat in Cluj 🇷🇴 If you ever find yourself in Cluj, Romania, here are five things you should eat - all within walking distance of the central plaza. Romania does soup better than almost anywhere. Zama is one of the best in town. The ciorbă de burtă - creamy, garlicky tripe soup. The ciorbă de fasole - beans, meat, smoky depth. Schnitzels are everywhere here. But the brunch version at Madrugada is different. A perfectly runny egg spills over pesto, spinach, and crunchy schnitzel on top of freshly baked bread. Italian influence runs deep in Cluj. You feel it in the pasta. At Tortelli Pasta Bar, they’re rolling it fresh all day. The carbonara is my favorite - but I haven’t had a bad plate there. The Turkish eggs at Eggcetera, a cute, always-busy breakfast spot, feel healthy and indulgent at the same time. Greek yogurt, nuts, herbs, chili butter, fresh bread. But whatever you do, don’t leave Cluj without sitting down for a proper Romanian feast. Signature meat spreads. A few shots of țuică. And of course, papanasi - those fried, cheese-filled donuts. Roata is my go-to for that. But you’ll find versions all over town. I’ve been to Cluj more than fifty times. I hope you get a chance to visit.
