Originally bred by the Buryat people, their effectiveness contributed to their spread across the vast grasslands of Buryatia (Siberia) and Mongolia and into adjacent regions before they were nearly annihilated in the mid-20th century. Mongolian Bankhar dogs are prized for their intellect and perseverance, even in the most hostile weather conditions on Earth. Like most livestock guardians, they are loyal and affectionate with their humans, but highly effective pack guardians against threats of any kind. For thousands of years, nomadic herders relied on these dogs to protect sheep, goats, yaks, and horses from wolves, snow leopards, and even eagles. Short Description Mongolian Bankhar dogs are large, with either a short or long coat in various colors. Darker dogs with light spots above the eyes are preferred; these are known as ‘Mongolian Four-Eye Dogs.’ These distinct markings help distinguish dogs from wolves in low-light conditions. Despite their size, they are athletic, fast, energetic, and tireless dogs. In Buryat, they are called ‘hotosho nokhoy,’ which literally means ‘yard wolf’ or, by extension, ‘enclosure wolf,’ and in Mongolian, they are called ‘bankhar,’ meaning ‘chubby, fat, fluffy.’ Contrary to tradition, they are called ‘Mongolian Mastiffs’ by outsiders (especially in China’s Inner Mongolia)—a marketing term usually designating Bankhar crosses with other breeds, created solely to produce a more imposing dog for show and status (similarly to the artificially developed FCI/show version of the Tibetan Mastiff, which is a Tibetan Mastiff in name only). The Buryat–Mongolian Wolfhound is the Russian designation, often considered the formal or official breed name in kennel and historical records, while ‘banhar’ is a common transliteration variant of Bankhar. Despite this name, Mongolian Bankhar dogs are not a fat breed, just big, weighing 50–60 kilograms (110–132 lbs) with a height of up to 75 centimeters (29.5 inches). They have low caloric needs for their size. Unlike many modern giant livestock guardian breeds, Bankhar dogs are efficient: they require surprisingly little food for their size, an adaptation to the sparse resources of nomadic life. Despite their appearance, they are only distantly related to their descendant, the Tibetan Mastiff. Bankhar dogs are comparatively long-lived, averaging 15–18 years. Hip dysplasia and other joint issues are very rare. They breed once a year. History Genetic studies place the Bankhar as a basal breed—close to the root of the domestic dog family tree. This makes it not just ancient but as potentially the ur‑type from which all livestock guardian dogs descend.
