@power.word.forge: DnD is great because anything can happen. But if you’ve already decided what cool things will happen… then anything can’t happen. You’re not the author. You’re the world. Which is actually way cooler once you dive into that instead. You discover the story at the same time they do. #d#dndd#dungeonmastert#ttrpgw#worldbuildinggamemaster
two years in to the campaign and my players only just learned they have been fighting the same fight through a thousand years. I'm just the narrator for their incredible journey, they are the ones telling the story.

Doom :
Hotter take, I started with a general idea and I build my sessions one at a time with a general theme, I set up scenarios and subtle lore drops but my players write the story

I think one of my favourite versions of this is from a crap guide to D&D: “Keep in mind where you want the story to go but if you restrict their agency then the players won’t feel like they’re in a world with infinite possibilities. They’ll just feel like their game is better off without them.”

the way I want to dm is the story is done the bbeg won and now you put the players in at the start and they can do what they want im still gonna add to the story depending on what they do of courses
