I've been saying this for a while! I'm an American and I will freely admit that as a child and teen I adored all things Japan because I deeply loved anime and video games. And it took me until my 20s to actually go below surface level to learn actual things about the country. I found out many amazing things about it. But eventually I started learning things like this. And not just this but this is a big one. I still love Japan, though I've never been, for many reasons. But I also don't like Japan for just as many reasons. It's gorgeous, the history and culture are rich, there's so much neat stuff. it's also kind of toxic to downright toxic in several ways. Women aren't in a good situation, the work culture in many places, and let's not forget the atrocities committed throughout history that are conveniently swept under kawaii rugs these days. I get attacked for pointing out bad things though online. Which is ridiculous. There's just as much bad here and in our history too. I'm not trying to hate or say America is better. But facts are facts. And the difference is most people (including many Americans) acknowledges the bad about America but not Japan. That's just dangerous and leaving people who go to Japan at higher risk out of ignorance.
