@wickdconfections: Sweet Potato Slump is the gooey, bubbling cousin of cobbler that quietly disappeared from everyday Black Southern baking 🍠🔥 Slumps were faster than pie, easier to stretch, and perfect for church suppers, family gatherings, and post-harvest meals. This self-saucing version bakes into layers — tender sweet potatoes, caramel syrup, and a soft golden topping — with bubbling edges that make it impossible to ignore. 🍠 Sweet Potato Slump (Self-Saucing Butter Cobbler) Preheat oven to 375°F / 190°C Butter a 9×13-inch metal baking dish Filling • 5 cups sweet potatoes, peeled & cubed (750–800 g) • 1¼ cups packed brown sugar (250 g) • ½ cup granulated sugar (100 g) • 2¼ cups hot water (530 ml) • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces (85 g) • 1 tsp cinnamon • ½ tsp nutmeg • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp vanilla extract Simmer everything except vanilla for 10–12 minutes until potatoes are just tender. Stir in vanilla. Pour potatoes and syrup into baking dish. Scatter butter on top. Do not stir. Batter • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour (155 g) • 1 cup granulated sugar (200 g) • 2 tsp baking powder • ½ tsp salt • 1 cup milk (240 ml) • 5 tbsp melted butter (70 g) Whisk until smooth and pourable. Assemble Pour batter evenly over hot filling. Do NOT stir. Bake Bake uncovered 45–55 minutes until golden and aggressively bubbling. Rest 5–10 minutes before scooping. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or evaporated milk. #BlackHistory #LearnOnTikTok #FoodTok #SouthernCooking #RecipeRevival

Sweet potatoes to enslaved people in the South is really reminiscent with the Irish relationship to potatoes (minus the blight…). I wish we realized how much we had in common 🥺 but of course ~society emphasizes our differences to keep us separated 😔

Thank you for using “enslaved” people vs calling our ancestors “slaves”!!!! It makes such a difference. Sweet potatoes also provide protein and kept folks full longer and gave them energy to do farming work! Love this series! You are a a gem! 💕💚🥰

The story crafting here is so good. The way the story of making the dish weaves into the story of the dish, and then she brings it all the way up to today. It’s not just this one, it’s so many, but I just wanted to say how impressive this shit is.

I moved to Ghana from America and I grow purple, orange, and west African white sweet potatoes. This looks soooooo delicious and the purple ones would make it so pretty.

Seeing this recipe makes me wish I still went to potluck events regularly. I'd love to make this, but we have too damn many diabetics in my house. I need to get back to potluck culture. Nothing better than being able to share a dish.
