Emil is 91 and lives on the third floor of an old brick building on Main Street in a Pennsylvania river town. There's no elevator. Last November his dog's back legs gave out. Brutus is a 13-year-old Newfoundland mix and weighs 120 pounds. The vet said the old dog could still get around on flat ground but would have to be carried on stairs. Emil's daughter lives in Arizona. Most days he can barely carry the groceries up. He knew what the next call would be, and he didn't want to make it. Across the street is the volunteer fire company Emil belonged to for 40 years. So he called the station instead and asked if anybody there knew a way to get a big dog down three flights. Six of them came over that evening, most of them half his age. They brought the canvas carry sheet they use on narrow stairwells, the one with handles all the way around. Four of them lifted Brutus onto it and carried the old dog down to the strip of grass behind the building. After 20 minutes they carried the dog back up. Brutus never fussed on the carry sheet. The old dog lay flat with front paws crossed and looked at the ceiling the whole way down. Then they made a schedule. Every morning at seven and every evening at six, two firefighters crossed the street and knocked on Emil's door. They came on Christmas morning. During the ice storm in January one of them came straight from a call with his boots still wet. Emil started leaving the coffeepot on for the morning crew. The evening crew got whatever he'd baked, usually banana bread. That went on twice a day for five months. Brutus learned the knock and was waiting at the door with the tail going before the second rap. In April an apartment opened up on the ground floor of the same building, and the landlord gave it to Emil. The six firefighters carried Brutus down the three flights one last time. Then they went back up and carried down the couch.
