@sd141414: When something becomes cheaper, we don’t use less of it. We use more. And we need more of its supporting services. Look up Jevons Paradox. The bottleneck shifts from writing code to managing what we’ve built. #systemsthinking #softwareengineering #aiengineering #futureofwork #engineeringjudgment
Respectfully, I disagree. What’s happening today has never happened in the history. Let alone software engineering, AI’s effect on society will be bigger than internet and probably industrial revolution. In both good and bad ways. Because of that, none of our experiences matter even though we’ve been in the industry for decades.

A random guy :
lol totally flawed logic.. using more does not mean companies need more people.. all the new work will be done by fewer people using AI tools

Many banking and insurance industries that need to pass audits won’t accept “ai did everything and ai tested it”.

Who are the companies building software for? AI will cause a huge upheaval in the job market across sectors, reducing employment at a large scale. with people having no money to spend, who are companies going to sell their products to?🥺

It’s not just engineers. It’s every industry and it’s the speed at which it’s changing that’s the issue. And regarding the changing scope of products AI is in its infancy. Sure engineers can project manager larger projects but AI will be able to do those things as it continues to develop. It’s an interesting time.

The problem is, coding will be instant, as it nearly almost is now with Opus 4.6. “More of it” in this case is inflation.

Exactly companies that use ai to cut cost won’t be able to compete against companies who use ai to boost productivity.

But it used to take teams of goood programmers. Now you only need a couple of people who understand the system they want to design. AI will do the rest.

The entire pipeline replaces a need for engineers. You need way less than in the past. 1 person can do the work of 12. We saw this in manufacturing with industrial automation.
