It feels like a lack of critical thinking is why society is starting to fail in the west

Socratic questioning have many problems. When reading the old dialogue it feels like they always have an answer and that Platon and Socrates did not actually practice what they preached. Another problem was that they tried to uncover one truth while there maybe many depending on perspective. And they were looking for an answer when they should look for understanding in stead. Seeking understanding make you ask different questions. And when you get an understanding, the answers come by themselves. Finally, there are no certain truths. There are only probabilities and if you treat everything you know as a probability it is much easier to be «wrong». Be inspired by Socrates, but do not believe the hype😂

💯 on stress-testing your ideas, and doing it yourself first. Step 2 would be doing it publicly though. Your own brain is limited by definition and you'll end up constrained by the boundaries of your own imagination, where you inevitably fall into the trap of navel-gazing. I feel we've lost respect for the concept of "heated discussions" for the sake of not offending others, but it's in these arguments that attacks are often coming from places you would never have come up with yourself. And in the moment it's OK to double down on your own opinion (the more different attack vectors, the better), from the outside this may appear as time wasted (or a pointless fight) but no doubt seeds will be planted. Whenever someone tries to categorically silence you (or a specific group of people), be suspicious of what they have to say. So yay to the Socratic method, but please keep voicing your opinions. It's not the speaking up that is the problem, it's the immovable belief that you have all the answers.

I am against defining concepts like you suggest. I have no need for it. Critical thinking is just something that happens when I actually want to understand. Because when wanting to understand I cannot just believe anything.

Yes, but just as the normal definition game has it's limits, so does this method. I see it all the time in software engineering: people building a simple application think how it would scale to thousands of users before having a simple working thing. Basically they break it before even making it. So my advice (from designing software systems for decades) is this: give extreme examples, but don't go into ridiculous territory or unrealistic territory. Because then you will end up having conclusions or convictions which may be resistant to ridiculous scenarios but are at the same time completely unrealistic. Without naming names, I will just say that there are whole political systems created just like that, in both the East and the West... and also because when many people believe one's fantasy inspired ideas, one tends to believe he is right and righteous, making a stupid idea into a cult which doesn't even accept criticisms.

My opinion is that this thinking is limiting… let me explain. There are many things that are not possible to define with strict thresholds. For example we can agree that a 1.80m person weighting 200kg is obese and the same person weighting 50 is thin. But which threshold do we actually define that makes someone either thin, obese or somewhere in between? This is again an edge example of something that is not easy to define with a collective agreement with precise terms, but there are many more and I believe concepts like justice to be one of them: complete injustice and complete justice are easy, but not so much in the threshold in the continuum. Believing that things are always possible to define is like believing there’s a universal truth, and I don’t really think so once you get into the real world.

@mannohneeigenschaften: hm. another inportant figure, immanuel kant, said that humans have to get out of their own immaturity. and that they have to come out of their own immaturity by using their own intellect, to enlighten themselves. those are the sentences of kant everybody knows. the really interesting thing is: kant wrote about that in that paper „was ist aufklärung?“ and these most recognized sentences are on the very first one or two pages of that paper. and nobody talks about that many more pages that follow in that paper. there he also say, so that everybody can become enlightened, everybody needs the possibility to speak freely in public. to enlighten yourself you need to use free sprach in public, probably also to get your though corrected or aknowledged by others. that’s so interesting that all ‚deep‘ talk about kant would ignore those pages on the importance of using intellect in a societal environment. it is key to be able to speak in public, for that self assurance, fo that feedback etc. maybe today, with social media we have created plattforms to do so. for the fist time in history ‚everybody‘ can become public. this is the first moment we actually provided this bare minimum. today we see all that struggle that comes up by this and immediately think that social media is devilish and needs to be restricted - which means nothing else than humans will be again be censored. it is not the technology that is faulty or dangerous. it is us having this immersively naive idea that everything would just become paradise in the moment everybody is getting access to public speech. of course not. this idea is completely freaked out, to get literally billions of individuals acting accordingly weithin a couple of years. who thinks so has absolutely no feeling about that debth and complexity of human society.
