As much as I’m excited about younger, fresher members of Congress, there’s a reason Nancy Pelosi was so effective in her prime. She was a master at whipping votes and getting legislation to the floor and passed, and she’s not wrong that you need the votes to back things up. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is smart, thoughtful, and great at shifting the conversation, but legislatively she hasn’t shown that same level of effectiveness yet, and as someone in her district in New York I’m paying attention. She reminds me a bit of Bernie Sanders in that she moves ideology and energizes people but hasn’t translated that into major legislative wins. I’d like to see her focus more on coalition building and passing actionable legislation rather than the viral moment, and still, much respect to Pelosi because in her prime she was a total badass.
