@sciencefunn: Thanks to modern antiretroviral therapy (ART), people living with HIV can now live long, healthy lives when diagnosed early and treated consistently — in many cases approaching the life expectancy of people without HIV. Research from recent cohort studies in Europe and North America shows that adults on long-term ART with good immune recovery have only a few years difference in life expectancy compared to the general population. HIV today is a manageable chronic condition — not an automatic terminal illness. Early diagnosis and lifelong adherence to ART keep the virus suppressed, protecting the immune system and reducing illness and death. One of the biggest breakthroughs is the concept Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) — when someone’s viral load is fully suppressed on ART, they cannot sexually transmit HIV to others. That’s backed by multiple clinical studies and public health evidence. Still, there’s no universal cure yet, and treatment generally needs to be lifelong because the virus can hide in reservoirs that current ART can’t fully eliminate. But the progress is huge — medical advances continue to improve drugs, reduce side effects, expand access to care, and save millions of lives around the world. Knowledge reduces stigma.
