they almost wouldn't let me fly in immigration because of this! they asked where i'm staying overseas and i said my niece (my first cousin's daughter) and the officer said "that's not your niece" and i was like so speechless because it felt i was lying to them

Only Anglo cultures (and those who were influenced by Anglo cultures) have that rule where it’s not your niece and nephew. I’m half Filipino and live in Miami. Every other culture - Polynesian, Latin, Caribbean, African, Asian, etc - it’s your niece and nephew. Familial relation is designated by generational proximity. Not parentage.
