@heart.2.heart.with.sammy: In 1959, as Nigeria prepared for the federal elections that would usher in independence, Obafemi Awolowo took a bold and unprecedented step in Nigerian politics. As leader of the Action Group, Awolowo did not limit his campaign to the Western Region, where his party was strongest. Instead, he carried his message across regional boundaries including into the Northern Region at a time when Nigerian politics was deeply regional. One of the most striking moments of that campaign came in Sokoto in 1959, where Awolowo and members of the Action Group arrived by helicopter. The use of a helicopter for political campaigning was extraordinary in Nigeria at the time. It symbolized modernity, ambition, and a determination to reach communities across vast distances. The 1959 federal election was the last before independence in 1960. Although the Action Group did not secure victory nationally, Awolowo’s nationwide campaign demonstrated an early attempt to build a truly national political movement beyond ethnic and regional lines. His tour of the North including Sokoto remains one of the most remarkable episodes of pre-independence political history in Nigeria. #NigerianHistory #ObafemiAwolowo #1959Elections #Heart2HeartWithSammy ©️Heart 2 Heart With Sammy
